Three‐Dimensional Surface Downwelling Longwave Radiation Clear‐Sky Effects in the Upper Colorado River Basin

چکیده
In complex terrain, non-parallel surfaces receive emitted radiation from adjacent surfaces. Qualitatively, where surface skin temperatures and lower tropospheric temperature humidity are not uniform, the downwelling longwave (DLR) will be determined just by atmosphere above a given location, but also temperatures. We quantify this three-dimensional radiative effect over Upper Colorado River Basin in clear-sky conditions calculating DLR with observed land-surface ECOSTRESS. find that is due to terrain-subtended sky-view represents ∼22% of flux, rising ∼28% ∼24% East Southeast Basin, respectively, can >50% extreme cases. The common omission atmospheric models leads an underestimation especially at higher elevations, which has significant implications for mountainous ecohydrology simulations.

Updated streamflow reconstructions for the Upper Colorado River Basin
[1] Updated proxy reconstructions of water year (October–September) streamflow for four key gauges in the Upper Colorado River Basin were generated using an expanded tree ring network and longer calibration records than in previous efforts. Reconstructed gauges include the Green River at Green River, Utah; Colorado near Cisco, Utah; San Juan near Bluff, Utah; and Colorado at Lees Ferry, Arizona...

This paper addresses the refinement and testing of a simple downwelling longwave radiation model. Oklahoma atmospheric surface-layer instrumentation system (OASIS) radiation data in combination with Oklahoma Mesonet weather data were used to evaluate various techniques for estimating downwelling longwave radiation, for daytime and nighttime as well as clear and cloudy skies. The Brutsaert [Wate...

متن کاملIdentification of Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature influences of Upper Colorado River Basin snowpack
[1] Given the importance of Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB) snowpack as the primary driver of streamflow (water supply) for the southwestern United States, the identification of Pacific Ocean climatic drivers (e.g., sea surface temperature (SST) variability) may prove valuable in long‐lead‐time forecasting of snowpack in this critical region. Previous research efforts have identified El Niño–...
متن کاملEstimation of Downwelling Surface Longwave Radiation under Heavy Dust Aerosol Sky
The variation of aerosols, especially dust aerosol, in time and space plays an important role in climate forcing studies. Aerosols can effectively reduce land surface longwave emission and re-emit energy at a colder temperature, making estimation of downwelling surface longwave radiation (DSLR) with satellite data difficult. Using the latest atmospheric radiative transfer code (MODTRAN 5.0), we...
